Laura SMART system

Last update: 04.09.2026, 00:08:13
The LAURA® Smart system is an efficient solution for urine analysis in laboratories, general practitioners’ surgeries and specialist outpatient clinics. Urine analysis with LAURA® Smart eliminates the subjective interpretation of colour reactions in diagnostic test pads, thereby making a significant contribution to accurate patient diagnosis.

The system uses two types of diagnostic test strips, which differ in the number of parameters measured:
Cat. number Product LEU NIT pH  PRO GLU UBG BIL KET BLD SG CP CRE MA
URPH0029 MicroAlbuPHAN® LAURA
URPH0028 DekaPHAN® LAURA

LAURA® Smart automatically identifies the type of test strip used. Parameters that can be determined using the diagnostic test strips include: pH, protein (ALB), glucose (GLU), ketones (KET), urobilinogen (UBG), bilirubin (BIL), blood (BLD), specific gravity (SG), nitrite (NIT) and leukocytes (LEU). Measurement quality is enhanced by the compensation pad on the diagnostic test strip, which eliminates the influence of varying urine sample colour.

LAURA® Smart offers two incubation options
  1. Inside the analyser – throughput of 60 test strips/hour
  2. Outside the analyser – throughput of up to 240 test strips/hour using the Smart Timing® function
The Smart Timing® function enables the precise external incubation of test strips for LAURA® Smart. Four colour-coded progress-bar timers are displayed on the analyser screen. The user can use four positions, each corresponding to the incubation time of one test strip.

A new test strip can be immersed for incubation whenever one of the colour indicators on the display is green. After immersing a strip in the urine sample, the user places it in the position corresponding to the green timer on the display and starts the incubation measurement by pressing the green timer. The timer starts running and changes colour from green to yellow. After 45 seconds, the timer changes from yellow to red and an audible signal is emitted. The user then places the corresponding strip on the analyser carrier; the analyser measures the strip after exactly 60 seconds of incubation.

The software enables a new incubation cycle every 15 seconds, indicated by a timer returning to green. This allows the measurement of four test strips per minute, or 240 test strips per hour.

LAURA® Smart performs an automatic self-check every time it is switched on. Calibration is verified using control strips supplied with the analyser, which can also be purchased separately.

LAURA® Smart offers two power supply options: portable operation using batteries (6 × 1.5 V AA) and stationary operation powered from the mains. Further advantages include a touchscreen display, connection to a PC or Laboratory Information System (LIS), and the option to connect a barcode reader (BCR) or external keyboard. The extensive software menu allows a range of user-defined settings. Users can select different sample entry methods, define the units for each parameter individually and add a short comment to each result. Results can be printed using the integrated thermal printer at a speed of 2 seconds per parameter.
